NY Times Debuted Colored Front Page Pics 16 Years Ago Today

The first time The New York Times used colored pictures on its front page was 16 years ago today — October 16, 1997.

If you can remember back that far (The Spice Girls’ Spiceworld was a number one album and George Clooney donned a nipple-centric Batsuit in Batman & Robin) you’ll recall that people weren’t pleased with the decision. Newspapers, the purists/grandpas said, were supposed to be in black and white. Colors were nonsense!

Despite the protests, everything worked out just fine.
