Nikki Finke is back and doing one of the things she does best: tooting her own horn. From her slightly delayed nikkifinke.com launch announcement: That’s why I designed my new logo to look the way it does – gritty and bullet-riddled with a fiery palm tree shooting sparks into the night sky more dramatically than any fancy klieg light. Let those wimpy Hollywood websites do glossy or garish or rewrite press releases or post stenography instead of sturm und drang. I’m all about this town’s gritty reality exposed through the harsh glare of my reporting. This is one of the big reasons Finke is so feared and beloved in Tinseltown. Because she traffics in one of the industry's most common currencies - ego-driven bravado. The big difference is that unlike many spouting similar monologues today at The Ivy, The Grill and The Farm, Finke can back it up. Welcome back, Nikki. Update (June 13) Finke, on her launch day, received a cease-and-desist letter from ex-boss Jay Penske. She has today shared the contents of that letter as well as some intriguing details: I dutifully sat out months because of the non-compete. That ended on April 1st when Penske did not pay the six-figure sum I was owed. So I was able to start work again on June 2nd. Meanwhile, Penske was negotiating with me to come back to Deadline! He was throwing money at me – nearly $500,000 a year to not even write a word – plus other good stuff. But every time I accepted his settlement, he would change terms adverse to me, and then we’d have to negotiate all over again.
