Sunday Front-Page Headline Gives Rise to #StopNYPostHate

It's what the New York Post does. They go font-large, politically-correct-slim and let the headline rip. But many today feel they have pushed that game too far with their coverage of the murder in Long Island of Hasidic real estate developer Menachem Stark: On the website Vos Iz Neias, there is an angry open letter: You have justified murder in the eyes of your readership. If your landlord is slow on calling the exterminator, or a leaky ceiling after a snow storm, it is okay to want him dead and act upon it. It is justifiable. Warranted. Completely understandable. Here is a man who was brutally murdered, and yet with no evidence whatsoever but innuendo alone you have declared Mr. Stark and thousands of other landlords like him, as perfectly justifiable candidates – for their lives to be snuffed out. Your words are borderline incitement to murder. Yes, murder. On Facebook, there is this gathering place. And on Twitter, there is the hashtag #StopNYPostHate. Here's a recent tweet from that thread by New York Councilman Brad Lander: JPUpdates published statements from Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) and Councilman David Greenfield: Greenfield: “I am disgusted that the New York Post condoned the murder of a businessman, husband and father of eight. This clearly crosses the bounds of decency and demands an immediate apology from the newspaper to the grieving family and the entire community. The murder of an innocent man is not something to be celebrated in New York City. It’s a horrific tragedy and the Post’s coverage of this death is borderline anti-Semitic.” Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is scheduled to lead a 3 p.m. protest press conference. There is also a petition on Change.org from New York resident Jake Taylor. At press time, it had received more than 2,000 signatures. Update (7:00 p.m.): A spokesperson for the Post has released the following statement: "The Post does not say Mr. Stark deserved to die but our reporting showed that he had many enemies, which may have led to the commission of this terrible crime. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time of loss."
