Neal Karlen Recalls 1990 Interview With Prince and Taking Toilet-Paper Notes

Part 2 of Karlen's conversation with Minneapolis Star Tribune "Dish" columnist C.J.

We wrote last week about Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist C.J.’s lively conversation with veteran journalist, author, Augsburg College professor and Prince confidant Neal Karlen. This weekend, she kindly alerted us to Part 2, which features more colorful recollections.

When Karlen interviewed Prince for a second time for Rolling Stone in 1990, it was far different from the casual atmosphere of their 1985 encounters. Forbidden from recording the conversation or taking notes, Karlen was forced to resort to a most unusual tactic:
