A Slice of SoHo at the Sunset Marquis

It has been three months now since Morrison Hotel Gallery opened for West Coast business in the lobby of the Sunset Marquis. The co-owners of the flagship gallery in New York's SoHo district spent a great deal of time looking for the right "foot traffic" location here in Los Angeles. When you add in the historic record industry vibe of the renovated establishment they chose on Alta Loma Road, it's hard to think of a better home for an outfit that represents about 90 top-flight music photographers. There have been a couple of dedicated exhibitions so far at the L.A. space highlighting the works of co-owner Henry Dilz and moonlighting musician Graham Nash. There was also a launch event late last month for the iPad book Led Zeppelin: Sound and Fury by client Neal Preston. FishbowlLA's favorite photo from the Nash catalog is one taken in 2002. Here's Nash's description of the story behind it: "I took my wife to the Kentucky Derby for our anniversary. It was May 4th. Obviously, people knew who I was, and we had great seats. Dennis Hopper was sitting behind us. Now, I'm not a betting man, but I looked through the things and I saw a horse called War Emblem." "We were right in the middle of the Afghanistan war, and I thought, 'War Emblem, f*ck, I'll put a hundred dollars on that...' Well, the bloody thing won! I won about $2000 for a hundred-dollar bet. Dennis played the same horse. And that's the moment he realized that he won." Co-owner Peter Blachley told us recently that among the shows planned for later in 2013 at the L.A. location is one featuring photos taken by longtime Jimi Hendrix collaborator Eddie Kramer.
