The company announced that it is moving its offices from the iconic Time & Life Building -- where the publisher has been since 1959 -- to Brookfield Place in Lower Manhattan. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Time Inc. CEO Joe Ripp announced the news in an email to staff. The move will bring Time Inc. within a two-minute walk of the new Condé Nast offices at One World Trade. Deadline New York The company looked at options in New York and New Jersey. But Brookfield Place’s planned $250 million renovation -- adding lots of upscale restaurants and shopping -- plus “the incentive package we received from Governor Andrew Cuomo and Empire State Development drove our decision to stay in New York City,” Ripp said. Time Inc. has a long-term lease at 225 Liberty Street to occupy six floors and 700,000 square feet of office space. Variety The publishing company will ease into its new headquarters in late 2015. The relocation comes as parent company Time Warner is preparing to spin-off Time into a separate, publicly traded company on June 6. WSJ With the Time lease, Brookfield has leased about 3 million square feet of the 4.2 million square feet of Bank of America Corp.'s Merrill Lynch office space that expired in 2013. Brian Williams Interviews Edward Snowden (TVNewser) NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams traveled to Moscow this week for an exclusive interview with Edward Snowden. It’s the former NSA contractor’s first-ever American television interview and it will air as an hour-long NBC News primetime special next Wednesday. NYT Snowden has previously been interviewed on German television. He also was interviewed by Vanity Fair magazine and has conducted some interviews over Skype, including one at South by Southwest last March. Variety The special is slated to air Wednesday, May 28, at 10 p.m. ET. NBC News said Williams traveled to Moscow after anchoring Monday’s NBC Nightly News to conduct the discussion with Snowden, who has remained in exile in Russia after disclosing in 2013 multiple NSA documents making plain the existence of various global surveillance program. The interview took place over several hours and included Glenn Greenwald, one of the journalists to whom Snowden showed the classified papers. HuffPost On Thursday morning, Greenwald tweeted a picture of himself along with Snowden, fellow journalist Laura Poitras and his partner David Miranda, causing people to wonder why he was in Moscow. The news about the Williams interview provided an answer. Fox News Anchor Gregg Jarrett Arrested in Minneapolis Airport (Star-Tribune) Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett, said by the network to be having “serious personal issues,” has been charged with a misdemeanor following his arrest in a bar at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. New York Post / AP Jarrett was taken into custody at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Northern Lights Grill in the main terminal, Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Patrick Hogan said. He said the officers reported that Jarrett seemed intoxicated, acted belligerent and refused to follow orders. Jarrett, 59, was booked into Hennepin County Jail on a preliminary charge of obstructing the legal process by interfering with a peace officer. His bond was set at $300. Mediaite Jarrett is expected to appear in court June 6. Just last week, Fox News had announced he was taking time off for personal reasons, causing a shuffle in the network’s weekend lineup. TVNewser In January viewers noticed odd behavior during one of Jarrett’s weekend shows. Jarrett, who is a lawyer, has been with FNC since 2002, joining from MSNBC, where he was a weekday anchor. Beginning in August, Brooke Baldwin and Carol Costello will anchor their respective hours of CNN Newsroom from NYC. Costello anchors Newsroom from 9-11 a.m. ET and Baldwin helms the 2-4 p.m. ET hours. HuffPost She and Costello are CNN's last two weekday anchors still hosting from Atlanta. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Rodney Ho called the move "the final nail in the coffin" as CNN strengthens its base in New York, though half of the network's employees and much of the operations remain in Atlanta. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media As reported earlier, CNN president Jeff Zucker is also moving production for State of The Union With Candy Crowley to New York, under the leadership of executive producer Liza McGuirk. The show will continue to be broadcast from Washington. Time Inc. Starts Selling Ads on Magazine Covers (FishbowlNY) Time Inc. has started selling ad space on the fronts of Time and Sports Illustrated. Ad Age Verizon Wireless ads will run this week and next on the covers of Time and SI. The ads are tiny, but their arrival puts a big crack in the longstanding tradition that kept ads off magazine covers. The industry's major players have until now almost entirely resisted pressure to sell cover ads, despite a strong need for new revenue in recent years. That's partly because ads on covers violate widely-observed guidelines from the American Society of Magazine Editors, but also because most editors believed in those guidelines, which are meant to emphasize and protect editorial independence from marketers. Mashable A spokesperson for Time Inc. denied reports that other advertising mock-ups of cover offerings are being shopped to advertisers. News of the ads drops just two weeks before Time Inc. becomes an independent, publicly traded company. The company will start in a difficult financial position with $1.3 billion in debt and stagnant revenue. Questionable Photo, Australian Song Presented as Evidence Against Al Jazeera Journalists (TVNewser) In their ninth court appearance since being imprisoned in Egypt in December, Al Jazeera journalists Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed had a new string of questionable evidence presented against them by prosecutors Thursday. A photo showing Fahmy standing behind former Egyptian military chief Mohamed Hussein Tantawi was presented, but didn’t pass the eye test among court reporters. Al Jazeera Several audio and video recordings provided by the prosecution against the Al Jazeera staff and other defendants in the trial were displayed during proceedings, according to media attending the session. The clips included general conversations between supporters of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and images of protests against former army chief, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The court also listened to audio recordings allegedly found in Greste's possession, an accusation denied by the Australian journalist. A chart hit by Australian singer Gotye was also presented as evidence. HuffPost The journalists were arrested in December for allegedly airing false news and conspiring with the Muslim Brotherhood -- charges which they and Al Jazeera reject. They have been held without bail, and made eight other court appearances prior to Thursday, only to have the trial adjourned each time. Financial details weren't disclosed. GigaOM Customers on Vodafone Red 4G plans priced from £26 ($44) will from July be able to get the subscription to Netflix as a new alternative option to free Spotify Premium access. As is the norm with Vodafone’s 4G plans, the first 3 months come with “as much U.K. mobile Internet as you want” -- after that, however, it’s back to standard data allowances. Barbara Walters’ Final Week on The View Posts Show’s Biggest Crowd in Three Years (Deadline Hollywood) A three-year high of 4.1 million viewers watched Barbara Walters’ final on-air week on The View. Among women 18-49, Walters’ so-long week -- including a Thursday reunion of all of the show’s co-hosts, and Friday’s parade of female news and infotainment TV talent who credited Walters with opening the door -- earned an 18-month high (648,000 viewers). HuffPost With 5.2 million total viewers tuned in, Walters' final episode was the show's fourth most-watched episode of all time. Hillary Clinton and Oprah, along with more than two dozen female broadcasters, showed up to surprise her. Walters retired Friday after five decades in television news. Jessica Coen Stepping Down as Jezebel Editor-in-Chief (BuzzFeed) Jessica Coen, the editor of Jezebel, will leave her post after four years as the site’s editor-in-chief, sources say. And while he made no further mention of movie production during his presentation, he said that Sony Pictures would cut costs by $300 million by the end of the fiscal year that runs through March 2016.
