Brian Stelter to Guest Host Reliable Sources (The Washington Post / Erik Wemple) Brian Stelter, a New York Times reporter covering television and digital media, will guest-host an edition of CNN’s Sunday program Reliable Sources, the media-watchdog show that longtime host Howard Kurtz recently left for a job with Fox News. In doing so, Stelter will join the likes of NPR’s David Folkenflik, CNN contributor John Avlon and others in CNN’s Reliable Sources bake-off. TVNewser Stelter will host Aug. 11. In the meantime, he will avoid covering CNN, as well as Fox News and MSNBC. Mediaite Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren is not taking the news well that Stelter will be guest-hosting Reliable Sources in August. In a blog post Tuesday, Van Susteren called Stelter’s move a “conflict of interest” and labeled him a “hypocrite” for his paper’s criticism of her husband’s ties to GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain. Snowden Granted Entry to Russia, Free to Leave Airport -- Source (RT) Russia’s Immigration Service has reportedly granted entry permission to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, who has been stranded at a Moscow airport since last month. The Atlantic Wire It's not know if or when Snowden actually plans to leave the airport, but his lawyer has stated Snowden intends to settle in Moscow and look for work, although he doesn't speak any actual Russian. Today, NBC Nightly News Hit by Modest Layoffs (TheWrap / MediaAlley) NBC News was hit by a round of layoffs recently, with Today and NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams losing a small number of staff, a network spokesperson told TheWrap. The spokesperson said that "less than 2 percent" of each show's staff was affected but declined to say the exact number or their positions within the company. TVNewser The layoffs -- part of a restructuring on the shows -- are a continuation of changes that began a few weeks ago, when the network parted ways with two correspondents and three senior producers on the programs. When reached by The Hollywood Reporter, Richie declined an interview, saying through an associate, "I'm just doing my job." Daily Beast The revelations on The Dirty have real-world consequences. The site was the first to publish racy photographs of Miss California Carrie Prejean, who later was stripped of her title. A few years later, a story on the site alleged that Ashton Kutcher had cheated on wife Demi Moore with a 22-year-old. The couple divorced soon after. Fox Viewers May Be Graying, But Their Passion Still Pays (NYT) Fox News continues to be near the top in cable television in terms of the number of viewers it attracts, but it is near the top in another category, too: The median age of its audience is among the oldest in television. FishbowlNY The elderly yelling “Give me my Fox News!” and “Where the hell are the Entenmann’s!?” force cable systems to shell out 94 cents a month to carry the channel. And with about 100 million subscribers, an expert guessed that Fox News will rake in $1.11 billion this year, just from those fees. The passion of the Fox News viewer has some questioning the adage that the younger the consumer, the better. "When I came in, one of the slogans at CNN was that 'CNN equals politics,'" Zucker told Fortune's Andy Serwer at Brainstorm Tech's 2013 conference on Tuesday. "And I said -- I put a line through that and said that CNN does not equal politics. Obviously, politics is a huge part of what we do and will continue to be. New Media Site The First Bound Launches (Poynter / MediaWire) Nicholas Jackson’s media site The First Bound, which he once described as “a smarter version of MediaBistro,” launched Monday. Jackson originally planned to call the site The Feature Well. That makes him the latest in a series of recent hires at the paper, which laid off a bunch of longtime veterans just two months ago and now appears to be replenishing its ranks. It also makes him the latest in a series of exits from Tina Brown's Newsweek-Daily Beast combo, where Siegel had been a senior editor. Matt Purdy has been named assistant managing editor and Marc Lacey is now associate managing editor, overseeing the paper’s weekend report. Purdy has been with the Times since 1993, most recently serving as an investigations editor. Lacey was most recently the Times’ deputy foreign editor. Prior to that he was a correspondent in Phoenix, Mexico, Nairobi and Washington. Eighty-two percent of Latino adults surveyed said that at least some of the news they followed in 2012 was in English, an increase from 78 percent in 2006. Nearly a third of Hispanics, 32 percent, said they got their news exclusively in English, according to the report, compared with 22 percent in 2006.
