Obama: Foley Execution 'Appalled' the Entire World (TVNewser) President Obama took the podium Wednesday in Martha’s Vineyard to speak about James Foley, the American journalist who was beheaded by ISIS in a video released Tuesday. The United States Wednesday morning verified the authenticity of the video, which also shows another captive American journalist, Steven Sotloff, and warns that he will be next to die. FishbowlDC Obama said, “No just God would stand for what they did yesterday or every single day… People like this ultimately fail. They fail because the future’s won by those who build and not destroy. The world is shaped by people like Jim Foley.” ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, FOX News, CNN, MSNBC and Al Jazeera America all broadcast Obama’s statement live. NYT Obama declared on Wednesday that the entire world was “appalled” by the videotaped beheading of Foley by Islamic militants, speaking as American warplanes conducted 14 airstrikes in Iraq and the State Department asked the Pentagon to send as many as 300 more American troops to Iraq for security. Mashable Obama sent U.S. troops to Syria earlier this summer to rescue a number of Americans held by a violent extremist group, including Foley, but the troops did not find the hostages, senior Obama administration officials said Wednesday. The officials said the rescue mission was authorized after intelligence agencies believed they had identified the location inside Syria where the hostages were being held. HuffPost Associated Press CEO Gary Pruitt condemned the murder of journalist Foley in a statement on Wednesday. His murder should be treated as a war crime, according to Pruitt. Foley went missing in Syria in 2012. He contributed to the GlobalPost and Agence France-Presse, among other media outlets. TVNewser CBS’s Clarissa Ward changed her profile picture, Fox News’s Conor Powell remembers him as “a great guy,” while Al Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fadel Fahmy, himself imprisoned in Egypt, says Foley's murder “will spark a revolution against terrorists.” These are just some of the ways those who knew and worked alongside the intrepid journalist are remembering their colleague killed by ISIS militants. NY Times Reporter Ordered to Leave Afghanistan (FishbowlNY) Mohammad Ishaq Aloko, the attorney general of Afghanistan, is not pleased with New York Times reporter Matthew Rosenberg. Aloko ordered Rosenberg out of Afghanistan and banned him from returning to the country after Rosenberg’s article about its elections ran in Tuesday’s Times. Mediaite Rosenberg was expelled from the country just one day after the Afghan government told him not to leave the country pending an investigation. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Once Rosenberg failed to appear for a new round of questioning on Wednesday, he was expelled. New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet criticized the decision, saying it was obvious Rosenberg wasn’t going to reveal his sources. Reuters Rosenberg, 40, was summoned for questioning on Tuesday after the newspaper ran a story about officials discussing plans to form an interim government and "seize power" if a deadlock over the presidential election failed to break soon. "Due to the lack of proper accountability and non-cooperation, the Attorney General's office has decided that Matthew Rosenberg should leave Afghanistan within 24 hours," the office said in a statement. "He will not be permitted to enter the country again." Rosenberg said he and his newspaper had been cooperating fully. Arrests of Journalists Shine International Media Spotlight on Ferguson (THR) The arrest of three German journalists reporting on the protests in Ferguson has sharpened international scrutiny of the events in the small Missouri city, where protests continue over the fatal shooting by a white police officer of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. Mashable A police officer has been removed from his post after he pointed his gun at a group of people documenting events in Ferguson on Tuesday night and threatened to kill them, St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said. Business Insider The officer apparently threatened a man who was filming him and responded "go f--- yourself" when asked his name. The video was reportedly filmed during protests Tuesday night. CNN A CNN crew also saw the officer point his weapon at those around him as he cursed, shouted and threatened people by saying he'd kill them unless they stayed away. [emailonly]{{{ jodslot01 }}}[/emailonly] CNN Wins Demo in Total Day, Prime; New Day, Highest Demo Ratings Ever (TVNewser) Fueled by continuing coverage of unrest in Ferguson, CNN won the A25-54 demographic in both total day and primetime Tuesday for the second straight day. Mediaite CNN’s New Day averaged 251,000 viewers in the demo Tuesday morning, beating Fox News’ Fox & Friends, which had 212,000. In primetime, CNN averaged 529,000 viewers in the demo, beating Fox News’ 523,000. The peak for CNN came during the 9 p.m. hour when Anderson Cooper 360’s 601,000 beat The Kelly File’s 530,000. THR / The Live Feed FNC did not surrender its total viewership crown at any hour during the day and was the only network improved from Monday with an average 2.3 million viewers in primetime and 1.4 million viewers over the course of the day. NFL App Launches on Apple TV (Re/code) Apple has added the NFL Now app to its Apple TV lineup. It launched earlier this month on other devices. THR Launched to coincide with the first week of preseason games, the app provides free access to game highlights, press conferences and original content -- everything except live games, which you can still only watch on TV. Still, the app is designed to provide a personalized experience based on the user’s favorite teams, players and fantasy rosters. Mashable Users will also have the option of upgrading NFL Now by signing up for NFL Now Plus, a $1.99-per-month service that delivers instant in-game highlights. The NFL adds to Apple TV's already robust offering of sports-content channels, including the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball TV, Major League Soccer, ACC Sports, Red Bull TV and ESPN. U.S. Military Bans The Intercept (The Intercept) The U.S. military is banning and blocking employees from visiting The Intercept in an apparent effort to censor news reports that contain leaked government secrets. According to multiple military sources, a notice has been circulated to units within the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps warning staff that they are prohibited from reading stories published by The Intercept on the grounds that they may contain classified information. Engadget Workers caught browsing the content might face "long term security issues," one such memo warns. And that's if they can read it at all; people in multiple military branches say the site is blocked altogether. The move isn't totally surprising, of course. The government regularly puts strict limits on the sites you're allowed to visit from its offices, and it has a legal obligation to keep classified content off devices where it doesn't belong. Now SoundCloud has decided it is time to grow up. On Thursday, as part of a new licensing deal with entertainment companies, SoundCloud will begin incorporating advertising and for the first time let artists and record labels collect royalties. Vocativ Founder Launches $120M Startup Fund; Invests in SocialStudios (LostRemote) Mati Kochavi, who founded digital news startup Vocativ, is adding to his social and digital portfolio in a big way. The Israeli entrepreneur launched Moonscape Ventures Wednesday, a $120 million investment company that will invest in the “Internet of Things, Smart Cities, Big Data and Media Startups,” according to a news release. As its first signature move, Moonscape has announced a $3.1 million investment in a startup called SocialStudios, which takes social media data and automatically morphs it into personalized video content. Wired Adds Jessi Hempel, Promotes Mat Honan (FishbowlNY) Wired has hired Jessi Hempel and promoted Mat Honan to senior staff writer. Hempel -- who will be a senior staff writer covering the business side of technology at Wired -- comes to Wired from Fortune, where she has worked for the past seven years. Prior to that she worked at Businessweek. Honan has been with Wired since 2012. He most recently served as a staff writer. Little Leaguer Mo’ne Davis Covers Sports Illustrated (FishbowlNY) Mo’ne Davis, a 13-year-old pitcher for the Philadelphia Taney Dragons, has already made history with her arm.
