New York Times Editor Treated for Cancer (NYT) Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The New York Times, had a malignant tumor removed from his kidney on Saturday and will spend about a week away from the office while recovering, he said in an email to the newspaper’s staff on Monday morning. FishbowlNY In the memo to Times staffers, Baquet sounded upbeat about the situation. He described the surgery as “minimally invasive” and “completely successful.” “My doctors have given me an excellent prognosis,” added Baquet. New York Post The tumor was discovered by doctors on June 12, Baquet said in the email --- and the decision was made that the situation needed “immediate attention.” HuffPost Baquet assured his newsroom that he would be back "as soon as possible.” "I know this comes as we are all trying to move forward in the newsroom," he wrote. He told the newsroom in his email that he would be keeping "in touch"with the paper's leaders while he stayed at home to recover. Capital New York The news of Baquet's illness comes promptly after a period of upheaval at the paper. Baquet, 57, took the top editorial position on the Times masthead only last month, after the surprise dismissal of Jill Abramson. As managing editor, Baquet had been Abramson's second in command. He has yet to appoint his own. Julianna Goldman Jumps from Bloomberg to CBS News (TVNewser) Julianna Goldman is joining CBS News as a Washington correspondent. She joins CBS from Bloomberg in August. Deadline Hollywood At Bloomberg Goldman was a White House correspondent for Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Television, as well as a weekly panelist on Political Capital With Al Hunt. Along with Charlie Rose, Goldman moderated Bloomberg’s first New Hampshire Republican presidential primary debate in 2011. Variety She has moved up through a variety of roles at Bloomberg in New York and Washington. Last year, National Journal named her one of the 25 most influential Washington women under 35. She grew up in Bethesda, Md., and graduated magna cum laude from Barnard College/Columbia University with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Goldman covered both the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns for Bloomberg News and Bloomberg TV and had the first one-on-one interview with President Obama after his re-election. Vinnie Politan Leaving HLN for 11 Alive as a News Anchor (AJC.com) Vinnie Politan is leaving Atlanta-based HLN July 3 and joining the Atlanta NBC affiliate 11 Alive as a morning anchor. TVNewser Politan currently hosts HLN Now: On the Case weekdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET. Before that, he was the anchor of several former HLN shows, including Prime News, After Dark and Making It in America. [emailonly]{{{ jodslot01 }}}[/emailonly] Egypt Court Sets Date for Ruling on Al Jazeera Journalists (Reuters) An Egyptian court said on Monday it would rule on June 23 in the case involving three Al Jazeera journalists on trial for more than five months on charges of aiding the Muslim Brotherhood, which the state has labeled a "terrorist organization.” TVNewser As the court announced the verdict date Monday, the journalists’ defense lawyers reiterated that this “trial is not a trial for these defendants alone -- but a trial of all journalists.” As the journalists’ defense lawyers made their closing arguments a little over a week ago, Mohamed Fahmy shouted from his cage: “You’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty… in this situation, we are guilty the second you are arrested, treated worse than criminals, rapists, and killers.” ABC/Australia Egyptian prosecutors have demanded the maximum penalty of 15 to 25 years in jail for all defendants. Four foreigners are charged with "spreading false news" and collaborating with and assisting the Egyptian defendants in their crimes by providing media material, as well as editing and publishing it. Nine of the 20 defendants are in detention, with the others being tried in absentia, including three foreign reporters who are abroad. Lara Logan Back on CBS (TVNewser) On Sunday, Lara Logan made her first appearance on CBS News since her on-air apology in November over a botched 60 Minutes report on the U.S. consulate attack in Benghazi in 2012. Deadline Hollywood Logan appeared on Bob Schieffer’s Sunday Beltway show Face the Nation to do an explainer on the escalating situation in Iraq. “Perhaps, nobody at CBS News has spent more time in Iraq over the years, since the first Gulf War, than Lara Logan,” Schieffer said to announce Logan’s return. HuffPost CBS announced earlier in June that Logan's leave of absence had ended, but it didn't specify when she would be back on the air, or whether she would be allowed to cover the kinds of military and national security topics that had gotten her into so much trouble. Condé Nast Inks First-Look Deal With 20th Century Fox TV (Deadline Hollywood) Condé Nast Entertainment has signed a first-look deal with 20th Century Fox Television for a scripted series to be developed and produced by 20th TV on the broadcast side and by its division Fox 21 in cable. WWD The agreement, which is the first of its kind for CNE, will allow the entertainment division to develop and produce scripted broadcast shows for 20th Century Fox Television. This year, CNE will have three series on the air, including, Vanity Fair Confidential on Investigation Discovery, The Fashion Fund on Ovation and Wired’s Geeks Who Drink on Syfy. CNE said it sold over ten series pilots to broadcast, cable and digital networks this year. Capital New York The first-look deal hints at CNE president Dawn Ostroff's ambitions to turn CNE, which was launched by Condé Nast in 2011 to develop film, television and digital video programming, into a television company with revenue to offset declines in the magazine business. At its "NewFront" presentation to advertisers earlier this year, CNE announced it would be launching a platform called The Scene to assemble all of its digital video content. The five-member Arlington County Board voted unanimously Saturday to allow developer Monday Properties to move ahead with a plan to replace the 1960s-era office building in Rosslyn, Va., across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., with a 28-story residential building of 274 units and a separate commercial building housing office and retail space. HuffPost The rebuilding will tear down the spot where one of the greatest moments in journalism and political history took place. It was the spot where the secret source known as Deep Throat -- later revealed to be Mark Felt, the former deputy director of the FBI -- leaked information about the Watergate scandal that ultimately led to Nixon's resignation in 1974. Egypt to Release Reporter on Hunger Strike (The Associated Press) Egypt's top prosecutor on Monday ordered the release of an Al Jazeera journalist who has been on hunger strike for more than four months to protest his prolonged detention without charges or trial. TVNewser Abdullah Elshamy and 12 others will be freed due to “health conditions.” Elshamy was taken in by Egyptian authorities last August while covering a protest held by supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. Elshamy was never formally charged with a crime and began a hunger strike in protest.
