Colleagues Remember 'Master Crossword Constructor' Merl Reagle

The tributes keep pouring in for Merl Reagle, a beloved syndicated crossword puzzle whiz who passed away suddenly over the weekend at age 65.

Hartford Courant columnist Frank Rizzo first got to know Reagle when the two were students at the University of Arizona working for campus newspaper the Arizona Daily Wildcat. He remembers his friend as the “ringmaster” of the circus known as the English language:

After the success of [2006 documentary] Wordplay, Merl became a kind of rock star, with fans rushing the stage after he gave one of his speeches or book presentations.
