Media Miscellany: Weekend Times Edition

There's always so much to cover from the weekend Times! I'm a little breathless. It's hard to choose, more ruminations on class via prom night? (Jenny 8., why is this one not online?) Jews who rock? (does Gwen Stefani channelling Tevye count?) Larry David, taking the time Arianna said he didn't have to write a full op ed piece? (Larry, you had a big platform, on Deep Throat for God's sake. Totally wasted. Not even funny, and didn't resonate. Come on, we know you're capable of more. Hey, we link because we care). See? Oy, the choice. Well, let's see how much more of yesterday's news we can pack into one post; come with us, won't you? David Brooks reminds us that we're all careerist bastards: We mentioned how personal Bob Woodward's account of the Deep Throat relationship was; apparently it resonated with a lot of people who could relate to blatantly sucking up to superiors and jockeying for position within the fluxing socio-professional firmament of their peers. Brooks says this is the takeaway lesson of Watergate: that the scrappy newbie can make it happen. Maybe Brooks is trying to be encouraging ("Woodward was nervous once, just like you") but my God he paints a bleak picture ("...they begin networking like mad, cultivating the fine art of false modesty and calculated friendships...hunting for the spouse who will look handsomely supportive during some future confirmation hearing"). Good Lord! Call me a Pollyanna, but I hope we can all say we learned a little more than that from Watergate: integrity is important, and also don't wait thirty years to ask for money. By the way, David Remnick, that's a great tie. No, you. The NYT still loves wives, still wants them all to have orgasms: The NYT continues its dizzy love affair with The Wife, first via the op-ed encomia of John Tierney and Matt Miller, and now thanks to Lisa Belkin, who thinks everybody oughta have one! I could really use one, too, my laundry is totally piling up and these dishes aren't gonna wash themselves! The NYT also continues with its drive to release the womanly butterfly (I don't really know what that means but it kind of works, no?), leading off an entire special section on women's health with the quest for rekindled sexual desire in women, reprising the massively popular are-your-orgasms-Darwinian-or-are-you-just-happy-to-see-me? piece from a few weeks back. Now that's what I call service journalism! Brazilian chicks, living in a New York City I've never, ever seen: The City Section talks to some feisty Brazilians about the fact that American men are slow to put the moves on (using the example of a reluctant HOCKEY PLAYER. Yes, because those hockey players are known for being so chaste and demure). Quickest way to disabuse them of these misconceptions: Brazilian girls, meet Christian Slater.
