According to numbers compiled by Mediafinder.com, an online database of American and Canadian periodicals, 187 new magazine titles launched during the first half of 2009. But we’re still in a deficit in terms of total number of titles because a greater number — 279 — closed up shop during the same period.
Mediafinder said regional interest magazines were hard hit during the first half of the year, with titles like Denver Living and Florida Inside Out both folding. However, the category was at the top for launches, with 12 new regional interest titles getting off the ground.
Other categories like construction, lifestyle and business magazines also took big hits (RIP Portfolio). “Business publications accounted for 46 of the new launches, 100 of the ceased magazines, and 16 of the magazines that ceased print editions,” Mediafinder said.
Besides regional interest and business, other categories that racked up launches included health & fitness, family and food & home. And some publications, like East Bay Living and Television Week, ended print runs and continued as online only magazines.
Looking forward to seeing what the second half of this year will bring.
