Made in NY Honors for Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep

Some of the most famous people in the entertainment industry were given New York City awards. The Made in NY Awards, in its seventh year, honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the City’s entertainment and digital media industries. Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at Gracie Mansion yesterday, along with the City's media and entertainment commissioner Katherine Oliver. “This has been a remarkable and record-breaking year for New York City’s entertainment and digital media industries, which are vital parts of our economic diversification strategy,” Bloomberg said. “More New Yorkers than ever before are taking advantage of the opportunities within these growing industries. Congratulations to all of the honorees, who are proof-positive that when you’re Made in NY, you can make it anywhere.” This year's recipients have six Academy Awards between them. Robert De Niro burst on the scene with Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets in 1973. A year later, he was an Oscar winner for his portrayal of Don Corleone in The Godfather Part 2. His role was completely in Italian. Hard to pick a signature performance, but Scorsese's Raging Bull is always atop any list. De Niro won his second Oscar, and only Best Actor trophy for the gritty boxing drama. In 2001, in the weeks following the 9/11 attacks, De Niro and business partner Jane Rosenthal, co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival. Meryl Streep is the most nominated actor in Oscar history, 17 times on the Oscar short list. She won three times, including this year for The Iron Lady. Streep also nabbed Oscars for Kramer Vs. Kramer and Sophie's Choice. But Streep got her professional start on the New York stage. Whoopi Goldberg is an Oscar winner for her comedic turn in Ghost. She is only one of a select few to win an Oscar, Emmy, Daytime Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe, and Tony Award. Goldberg, produced Sister Act: The Musical and hosted the Tony Awards in 2008. She currently appears on ABC’s The View. Kelly Ripa hosts the nationally syndicated Live! with Kelly. She begins her 11th season on the show, as a new partner is sought to replace Regis Philbin who retired last fall. After 10 consecutive Daytime Emmy nominations, the duo finally got the prize in 2011 as Outstanding Talk Show Host. Ripa ventured into prime time in 2003 with Hope and Faith, produced in New York. She spent 12 years on All My Children, winning three Soap Opera Digest Awards. Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara were given the Mayor's Award for Lifetime Achievement. These days Stiller is known as Ben Stiller's father. On TV, he's best remembered as George Constanza's dad on Seinfeld, and later as Arthur on King of Queens. But during the 1960s, Stiller and Meara were one of the hardest working comedy teams. Career-turning performances took place on The Ed Sullivan Show.
