<em>Big Government</em> Publishes New <em>Planned Parenthood</em> Sting Video

Live Action founder Lila Rose has published a new--once again, highly suspect, highly edited--video on Andrew Breitbart's Big Government site, purporting to show Planned Parenthood workers in Virginia helping a "pimp" to circumnavigate the law to get abortions for his underage prostitutes. Writes Rose: Young girls are going into Planned Parenthood clinics every day, too many the victims of abuse. According to the Department of Justice, an estimated 300 to 400 thousand children are trafficked for sex every year. Some are taken to Planned Parenthood clinics for secret abortions. Instead of reporting the abusers of minors and young women, Planned Parenthood is enabling pimps and predators with their refusal to report abuse and willingness to assist the pimp’s underage prostitution business. Yuh, huh... Well, that's the biggest bullshit we've seen in quite some time. If what Rose says is true, then, as a journalist, the natural thing to do would be to find several of these trafficked girls and tell their stories. Then you send reporters out undercover to corroborate the girls' stories. Instead of, you know, making the whole thing up. This new video could not be edited in a more patchwork fashion. It reminds us of one of those Arnold Schwarzenegger soundboard phony phone calls. As Media Matters reports, after the undercover visits, Planned Parenthood workers in Virginia notified local law enforcement that they had been contacted by someone purporting to run a child sex ring. Planned Parenthood officials released the following statement, explaining how they handled the situation. In a recent round of secret videotaping in January 2011, at least four health centers in Virginia received visits in a short period of time from persons claiming to be involved in the sex trade, involving vulnerable minors. Local authorities, as well as federal authorities, were alerted to these visits. In this morning's publicized tape, the Planned Parenthood staff member reacted professionally to a highly unusual person posing as a patient. After the encounter, the staff member immediately notified her supervisor, who subsequently notified members of Planned Parenthood's national security team, who are working with the FBI, which is investigating these visits. It is clear that Live Action is coordinating its activities to support legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, introduced by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) to defund Planned Parenthood by stripping it of Title X family planning funding, which Planned Parenthood's local affiliates receive to provide low-income women with birth control, family planning, and preventive care, including lifesaving screenings for breast and cervical cancer. Of course, despite the ridiculousness of the whole thing, the conservative media universe continues to use the videos as justification to strip Planned Parenthood of its federal funding. And their shrill, cynical cries will probably work too, because our country is a free range farm for idiocy. And tens of thousands of women will die of ovarian cancer because they no longer have access to free pap smears. Hooray!
