Lee Daniels Is Looking for Fan Footage of the Apollo Theater

Before the films Precious and The Butler and before the smash FOX-TV series Empire, Lee Daniels was just a Philadelphia kid with a dream, stoked by visits as a teenager to the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem. So imagine what a thrill it is for Daniels to now be attached as director of an officially sanctioned documentary about the place.

From this week’s announcement:

“I am honored to be entrusted with the story of this incredible American iconic institution and work with this team,” said Daniels. “I used to go to The Apollo Theater as a kid and never in a million years would I have imagined I would be back to be doing this – it is very special for me.”

Added co-producer Nigel Sinclair: “We are all honored to be entrusted with this triumphant American story, and so fortunate that Lee Daniels has committed to lead the team. The Apollo has exerted such unprecedented influence and power on American culture, from its beginnings in 1934 to its towering presence in the 21st century. It is a story that will amaze.”

Daniels, Sinclair, co-producer Jeanne Elfant Festa, together with Apollo Theater CEO and president Jonelle Procope, are appealing to fans to get in touch if they have any audio, video or photos that could be used. The contact form, for those interested, is here.
