Mickey Spillane created a Mike Hammer, private-eye empire: novels, TV shows, movies. Spillane, who died Monday at the age of 88, was one of the best-selling authors of the 20th century.

But in Pop Culture Land, you’re only as good as the image you sell of yourself.
