This just in — Jobvite’s 2012 Social Job Seeker Survey revealed a lot of interesting stats, one of which is that approximately 76 percent of job seekers use social media in their hunt for a new gig.
Plus, it sounds like the job search isn’t like hitting an on or off button. Rather, it’s always on. The survey showed that 75 percent of employees are actively looking or are open to exploring new opportunities.
While the majority of the workforce is keeping an open mind about new jobs, almost 61 percent of survey respondents indicate finding a job has become more difficult in the past 12 months. Furthermore, 41 percent of job seekers who are currently working say they’re overqualified for their current role.
More than 2,100 adults were surveyed and of that number, almost 1,300 people were currently employed.
As for social media, Twitter is being used by 46 percent of the workforce compared to 37 percent last year. LinkedIn saw a big surge as it leapt from 32 percent in last year’s survey to 41 percent. Facebook remained pretty steady — 83 percent of employees are on it compared to 82 percent from last year. Job seekers are seeing the importance of social media; 64 percent have accounts on at least two networks.
Considering the weight of social media, one in four job seekers have been asked for social media profiles during an interview and more of them are updating their content with professional information compared to previous surveys.
On the other side of the coin, former Jobvite surveys revealed 86 percent of recruiters are likely to check out social media profiles of candidates and 48 percent make it a consistent part of their recruiting process.
