Jobless Claims Up Again, Economists Baffled

Claims for unemployment benefits for newly-laid off workers rose last week to 472,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week. That’s the highest level in a month.

“Most market economists have been expecting claims to fall below 450K for several weeks now,” Kevin Logan, an economist with HSBC Securities, told the Associated Press. “The wait is getting longer and longer. As each week goes by, doubts about the underlying strength of the economic expansion grow.”
