Is The New York Times' Gift Guide Practicing Discrimination?

New York Times-watcher blog NYTpick.com raised an interesting point about the section of the Times‘ 2009 Holiday Gift Guide called “Of Color|Stylish Gifts,” which draws “inspiration from the lives of Barack Obama and Sonia Sotomayor” and includes gifts such as Baby Jamz, a henna kit, and a gospel cruise.

This is the first time, says the blog, that the NYT has put out a guide “aimed exclusively at the paper’s non-white readers.”

Is it racist to include a totally separate gift-buying section for anyone not white? We doubt the New York Times meant any disrespect, but rather blundered in a totally misguided direction while trying to address the fact that maybe not all its readers are upper-class middle-aged white New Yorkers.
