Howell Raines Honors the Memory of Photographer Spider Martin

Before joining the Times in 1978, the former executive editor published an oral history of the civil rights era.

When The Independent compiled some of David Carr’s “Greatest Quotes,” they sourced a “Media Equation” column for which the late reporter wrote this:

Jayson Blair was a friend of mine. I watched Howell Raines fly into a mountain from a very close distance. I saw the newspaper almost tip over when the print business plunged and the company had to borrow money at exorbitant rates from a Mexican billionaire…

Tomorrow night, former NYT executive editor Raines, an Alabama native, will be speaking in Selma at a free event focused on the civil rights era.
