Heading to D.C. for NLGJA 2008

I will be on a plane this weekend heading to the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association conference in Washington, D.C. to lead the online student project. It will be a busy week and I’ll likely be working with the students for most of the time, but posting will continue as usual.

And because I’m not above self promotion, I’d like to share two projects I’ve created in the past that addressed gay-themed issues, both on opposite ends of the spectrum.

The first, entitled Somewhere Over the Rainbow, is three print stories and three multimedia stories created some time ago that explored what it was like to be gay in the West African country of Ghana. Because homosexuality is borderline illegal in the country some stories, like an intimate look at the gay clubs of Ghana, were better told in print, while others were best suited for multimedia. All the interactive projects were shot with a $100 digital camera/recorder.

The second is Landmark Moments in Gay Hollywood, which was created for Entertainment Weekly last year. The video gallery was an in-depth look at some of the film and television moments that were firsts in their portrayal of gay men and women onscreen. The project was nominated for a 2007 GLAAD Award and is proof that great journalism can happen no matter your market.
