Gulf Spill Photos and the Science Behind Them

National Geographic’s Daily News blog not only has several stunning pictures of the Gulf oil spill, but the deep captions also offer some of the most coherent and concise scientific explanations of the spill we’ve read.

Because oil is buoyant, scientists expect anything that leaks from the pipes to come to the surface. But how fast the oil moves depends on the size of the globules that form. Under the enormous pressure of deep water, small globs rise more slowly than large ones.
