<em>Good</em> Magazine Staffs Up

LA-based Good magazine has announced a bunch of new hires. Nice to see earnest journalism thriving in early 2011. Dwell vet and New York Times' Opinionator blogger Allison Arieff is the mag's new editor-at-large. Arieff won a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2005 as the editor-in-chief of Dwell. Other hires: Nicola Twilley (also a Dwell vet) was named Food Editor; Cord Jefferson is the new Culture Editor; Ben Jervey the Environment Editor; and Liz Dwyer is the Education Editor. Press release after the jump: Los Angeles, CA, January 10, 2011...Zach Frechette, Editor in Chief of GOOD, announced today a number of new additions and expanded roles at GOOD including two new editors and larger editorial roles for three longtime contributors. Allison Arieff has been named Editor at Large, Nicola Twilley is named Food Editor, Cord Jefferson is Culture Editor, Ben Jervey becomes Environment Editor, and Liz Dwyer is Education Editor. "These additions to the team represent our first significant investment in the editorial product in a number of years," says Frechette. ALLISON ARIEFF - EDITOR AT LARGE Allison Arieff is a Contributing Columnist for the New York Times' Opinionator blog. She writes and consults on issues related to media, food, design and sustainability.She is the former Editor-in-Chief of Dwell which won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2005 under her tenure. Arieff is author of the books "Prefab" and "Trailer Travel: A Visual History of Mobile America." She lives in San Francisco where she has a 500-square foot urban farm in her backyard. NICOLA TWILLEY – FOOD EDITOR Nicola Twilley is the author of the blog Edible Geography, and a freelance writer with work published in The Atlantic, Volume, Dwell, Wired UK, Landscape Architecture, Urban Omnibus, and more. She is also co-director of Future Plural, co-founder of the Foodprint Project and co-curator of the recent "Landscapes of Quarantine" exhibition and design studio at Storefront for Art and Architecture. CORD JEFFERSON - CULTURE EDITOR Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Cord Jefferson has since been a pro soccer player in Tijuana, a kidney donor in Saudi Arabia, and left for dead in Italy. Throughout it all, he's done reporting and writing for the likes of National Geographic, The Daily Beast, The Huffington Post, The Root, Filter, GIANT, Jezebel, Wonkette, Nerve, The American Prospect, The Awl, and various other publications. His non-fiction essays have been included in two anthologies, and his comedy writing has appeared on MTV. BEN JERVEY - ENVIRONMENT EDITOR Ben Jervey works to better communicate climate, energy, and environmental issues to mainstream audiences. He writes a weekly column for GOOD called "The New Ideal," and has freelanced for many other magazines, newspapers, and websites. Ben has also worked with many environment, education, and clean energy non-profit organizations. His reporting and work on climate change and clean energy have brought him from the streets of New York to the glaciers of eastern Greenland to the plenary halls of United Nations climate negotiations to the mountain villages of Vietnam. A few years back he wrote a book--The Big Green Apple--on living a lower impact life in New York City. A bicycle enthusiast, Ben has ridden across the United States and through much of Europe. LIZ DWYER - EDUCATION EDITOR Liz Dwyer has over fifteen years experience of in education, including teaching grade school in Guangzhou, China and in Compton, California. Dwyer later joined Teach For America’s Los Angeles staff, where she served as a program director supervising first and second-year K-12 teachers in the Compton, Lynwood and Los Angeles Unified school districts. Dwyer has written extensively on the topics of parenting and the connection between race and education. Her work has appeared in Good Housekeeping, Parenting and numerous online publications.
