Lawrence Wright Cheers Going Clear Emmy Triumph

New Yorker contributor calls Television Academy choice a "stand-up declaration."

Not too many print journalism arcs start with a National Magazine Award and end with a national Emmy prize. But that’s the case for The New Yorker contributor Lawrence Wright.

His February 2011 article “The Apostate” led to the 2013 book Going Clear. And last night, in downtown Los Angeles, Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary about Scientology adapted from that book won three Creative Arts Emmys: Outstanding Documentary, Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing. Here’s how Wright framed the significance of the win to Tony Ortega:
