Gawker Spins Off Wonkette, Gridskipper and Idolator

Jezebel’s staying put but Gawker Media will jettison three of its sites: Wonkette, Gridskipper and Idolator.

Ken Layne, Wonkette’s managing editor, will take over the site as it becomes part of the Blogads network. Lockhart Steele‘s Curbed network is the new owner of Gridskipper, while Idolator is now in the hands of Buzznet, which recently purchased music blog Stereogum and last week denied it was seeking to purchase more blogs (liars).

In an email, Gawker’s founder and publisher Nick Denton explained why he was selling the sites: “To be blunt: they each had their editorial successes; but someone else will have better luck selling the advertising than we did.”

The email states that “most” of the writers will remain with their current blogs but doesn’t provide any more details.
