Gannett will not stop until it owns Tronc (formerly Tribune Publishing). According to The New York Post, Gannett execs have met with Tronc execs, and the former are preparing a new bid for the latter to consider.
Gannett’s most recent offer—which was rejected by Tronc—was for $864 million. That was in June. Since then, Gannett has purchased a group of New Jersey newspapers and the digital marketing company ReachLocal.
It appears those deals haven’t satisfied Gannett. It still yearns for the soft embrace of Tronc, like a scorned lover who thinks that perhaps it was all just a misunderstanding.
