Four Basic Back-to-School Supplies to Bolster Your Home Office

Let's face it: Whether or not you have kids, this time of year brings back memories of going back to school. Whether it's the crisp crack of a new textbook or the clean first sheet of a notebook both literally and metaphorically, sometimes you just have to get back to basics. After strolling down an aisle (ok, or a Web site) there are a few oldies but goodies that you may need to bolster your journalism desk or even your back pocket. 1. The legal pad. Seriously. When was the last time you wrote to-do lists the old-fashioned way? Or took notes during an interview (job interview or even phoner) on a pad with legal-sized paper? 2. File cabinets. Considering most of us have gone completely paperless, there are still times when you have important employment or freelancer contracts to file. This is one of them. Although this may not necessarily fall into the category of school supplies a la pink erasers and Bic pens, it will certainly do your home office good. 3. Spiral notebooks. As in the pocket-sized variety. Suffice it to say, it's probably a safe assumption we're all hooked on our mobile devices. Whether you're out in the field doing ground reporting or work in PR at a client meeting, something will pop into your head. While some of us make notes in our mobile phone to ourselves, there are times (perish the thought, we know) when your battery will die. Or you'll be in the subway. Or you'll lose a signal. There's nothing as fool-proof as having a little handy notebook to literally jot down notes. So old school, isn't it? 4. Sharpie pens. Sure, we know there are probably apps that exist for notetaking but since we're kicking it old school, you might as well jot down notes, interviews, and to-do lists with Sharpie pens (the company known for colorful markets also makes fine tip pens as well.) After all, why should elementary school kids get in on all the fun? Sometimes to put a little spring into your step, all you need is some new ink and organization abilities to amp up your office supplies.
