Former LA Times Staffer Stuart Silverstein Goes to FairWarning

The consumer advocacy and health and safety online journalistic outfit FairWarning has hired a former LA Times staffer as its new associate editor. Stuart Silverstein was on staff for 23 years as a writer and editor and has more recently been teaching at USC's Annenberg journalism school. FairWarning is a relatively new outfit, launching last March. It also happens to share a name with a pretty awesome Van Halen album from the 80's, back when David Lee Roth was still in the band. Press release after the jump: LOS ANGELES (July 20, 2010) -- FairWarning (www.fairwarning.org), a nonprofit online publication featuring in-depth stories on safety, health and corporate conduct, has named veteran newsman Stuart Silverstein assistant editor as it continues to expand its staff. Silverstein spent 23 years as a staff writer and editor for the Los Angeles Times, and was deputy national political editor when he left the paper in 2008. Prior to that, he covered labor, economics and higher education as a reporter for the Times' business and metro staffs. Earlier in his career, Silverstein was a reporter and editor for newspapers in Atlanta, Dallas and Buffalo. In addition, Silverstein taught business journalism at USC's Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, and spent a semester as Annenbergâ€™s Los Angeles Times Journalist-in-Residence. "Stu is the consummate pro -- an excellent editor, reporter and writer," said Myron Levin, founder and editor of FairWarning. "We're excited that he has decided to join us, and we know he'll make terrific contributions." FairWarning, which began publication in March, recently broke a story about a plan by Washington lobbyists to unite the electronics industry against tougher laws on drivers using cell phones and other mobile devices ("Lobbyists Target Distracted Driving Campaigns by Oprah, Ray LaHood"). Major news outlets, including The New York Times and the Washington Post, then took up the issue. The media coverage prompted Transportation Secretary LaHood to hold a press conference denouncing the plan, and the lobbyists ultimately scuttled their plans for the coalition. Along with original articles, FairWarning offers on a daily basis a wide sweep of legal and regulatory news, including summaries of court rulings and reports from news organizations, think tanks, advocacy groups and academic and professional journals. The project is guided by a distinguished board of directors, including Margaret Engel, director of the Alicia Patterson Foundation and a former editor and reporter for The Washington Post; Charles Lewis, founder of the Center for Public Integrity and the Investigative Reporting Workshop at the American University School of Communication; Vernon Loeb, deputy managing editor for news and multimedia at The Philadelphia Inquirer; William K. Marimow, editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner; and Henry Weinstein, a law professor at UC Irvine, former Los Angeles Times reporter and a founder of the Center for Investigative Reporting.
