Eric Bates Named Editor of New Republic

Win McCormack, who owns the mag, has tapped himself as editor in chief. He can do that.

New Republic has named Eric Bates editor and Win McCormack editor in chief. McCormack is also the owner, having purchased the magazine from Chris Hughes in February.

Bates most recently worked for First Look Media’s The Intercept. He previously spent more than a decade as executive editor for Rolling Stone.

Bates also worked as investigative editor for Mother Jones and was editor in chief for Southern Exposure.

Gabriel Snyder, New Republic’s previous editor in chief, stepped down two weeks ago.
