<em>Entertainment Weekly</em> Hires New LA Bureau Chief

Jon Barrett has just been hired as Entertainment Weekly's new LA bureau chief, managing editor Jess Cagle announced to staff today. Barrett comes over to EW from The Advocate, where he had been editor-in-chief for the past three years. Back in 2009, he also collaborated with Matthew Shepard's mother Judy on the book The Meaning of Matthew. Barrett officially starts his new gig April 4. Cagle's memo to staff after the jump: I’m thrilled to announce that Jon Barrett will be joining Entertainment Weekly as our Los Angeles Bureau Chief, reporting to me. Jon joins us from The Advocate, where he has been the Editor In Chief for the last three years. Under his remarkable guidance, The Advocate has become an exciting, multiplatform operation with enterprising, news-making covers; digital growth; and sharp, respected reporting. I look forward to having his leadership and creativity in our growing Los Angeles bureau. Plus, he’s a great guy and I know you’ll all love him. Before The Advocate, Jon was Features Director for O At Home and served as Senior Editor at Cargo. And this is not his first stint at Time Inc.; starting in 2004, he served for a year as senior editor at Real Simple. Jon grew up in Idaho (if you’re thinking of a potato joke, he’s probably heard it before) and attended grad school at Northwestern University in Evanston with his new EW colleague Dan Snierson. Besides his distinguished work in magazines, he has also written several books, including 2002’s The Hero of Flight 93: Mark Bingham. In 2009 he collaborated with Matthew Shepard’s mother, Judy, on The Meaning of Matthew—a bestseller that was featured in EW. A longtime fan of EW, Jon starts each day by checking EW.com for Tonight’s Best TV and sets his DVR accordingly. He flips to the Hit List and Bullseye the second he gets his magazine each week. His tastes in TV range from PBS American Experience to the Real Housewives. And he’s a huge fan of Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race (except for the Family Edition), The Good Wife, and Parks and Recreation. In movies, he recently loved Exit Through the Gift Shop, I Love You Phillip Morris, and Black Swan. Favorite books include Justin Hill’s The Secret Historian. On his iPod: Radiohead, Robyn, and Darren Criss’s Teenage Dream. I’m really excited for all of us to be working with Jon. Please join me in welcoming him when he shows up for work on April 4. Jess
