The New York Times is reporting that Ellianna Placas, Essence’s fashion director, has left the magazine. Ever since Placas was hired in 2010, she was under a storm cloud of controversy for being the first white fashion editor at Essence.

Above is a Media Beat interview with Essence’s editor-in-chief, Constance White, where she discusses Placas and the debate surrounding her employment at the glossy.

As of now, there hasn’t been a successor named.
