Department of Labor Announces New Regulations to Improve Disability & Veteran Hiring

And now for something completely different…let’s switch to hard news. Vice President Joe Biden recently announced two new rules regarding the advancement in hiring for veterans and individuals with disabilities. They will take effect in approximately 180 days.

The Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) and Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act will essentially ensure potential workers will have meaningful opportunities to get jobs they’re qualified for and will keep them as well.

What’s different about these rules in particular is that they provide metrics to keep employers accountable as it relates to equal opportunity for these two groups of candidates.

Per the notice we received, here are the regulations:

  • The VEVRAA rule requires contractors to establish an annual hiring benchmark, either based on the national percentage of veterans in the workforce (currently 8%), or based on the best available data and factors unique to their establishments.
