California Newspaper Unions Making Moves

It’s been an up and down week for California newspaper unions. Via Romenesko we see that guild members at the San Jose Mercury News and the Bay Area News Group-East Bay voted to ratify new contracts. Members weren’t overly high on the deal, which included some concession. Workers are now subject to five unpaid furlough days in the next five months and a freeze was put on vacation accruals. For that, workers earned the promise of a brief reprieve from future layoffs.
