CalArts: From Gnomes to Antz

We’re feeling even more guilty about missing CalArts’ much ballyhooed graduation week binge now that we’ve read the fired up review from NY Times writer Manohla Dargis about “Tomorrowland: CalArts in Moving Pictures,” which opens at MoMA Thursday. Dargis gives some long-due credit for CalArts film and animation grads, and celebrates a program that, while Disney-infused, has nurtured some of the most varied moving images of our time.

Actually, she had us with her opening line: “There is no exact moment when the cultural epicenter of the country shifted from New York to Los Angeles, just a series of progressive baby steps to the left.”
