Buffalo News Asks 23 To Retire

The Buffalo News is trying to reduce its headcount by 23, including eight in the newsroom, the Newspaper Guild reported yesterday.

The company has a pretty strict list of who they want to go: nine district managers, eight newsroom employees, three in classifieds, two in accounting and one in inside circulation. Employees have until April 26 to take the buyout, and if the company doesn’t reach its headcount reduction there may be layoffs.

“This is the most-attractive buyout offer The News has offered in a long time,” Jim Heaney, who led the Buffalo News Guild’s negotiation team.
