BLS: Mass Layoffs Worst in Februrary

Mass layoffs&#151any layoffs that affect more than 50 employees of a company — were the worst in February ever, the Bureau of Labor reports.

The BLS reports that the number of mass layoff events in February was 2,262, with 218,438 people filing for unemployment as a result. (This doesn’t count people laid off as not part of a “mass layoff.”)

“The West registered the highest number of initial claims in February,” the report says, “due to mass layoffs (65,792), followed by the Midwest (64,973), the South (55,542), and the Northeast (32,131),” and the hardest-hit states include California (45,557), Illinois (19,469), Pennsylvania (11,683) and Wisconsin (9,998.)
