Bloomberg Spent $650 Million of Own Money on Being Mayor

Say what you want about Michael Bloomberg as a media mogul and/or a mayor, but know this: The dude knows how to spend money. The New York Times reports that Bloomberg spent about $650 million (an “undoubtedly low” estimate) of his own fortune during his time as mayor of this fine city.

What did Bloomberg spend all that money on? We’re glad you asked! Below are some of our favorites.

  • $62,400 — spent on cleaning two giant aquariums in City Hall, every week for the past 12 years
  • $500,000 — used to pay for a jaunt to China
  • $28 million — cost of a completely necessary private plane
  • $73 million — used to defeat Mark Green in the 2001 mayoral election.
