According to the Times, Apple was told by Chinese officials to delete the Times’ apps for being “in violation of local regulations.” The apps were removed December 23, in what amounts to a major setback for China’s Times readers, who already haven’t been able to access the Times online since 2012.

“For some time now the New York Times app has not been permitted to display content to most users in China and we have been informed that the app is in violation of local regulations,” Fred Sainz, an Apple spokesman, told the Times.
