21 Consumers Union Employees Dodge A Layoff Bullet

Consumers Union, which publishes Consumer Reports, has reached an agreement with staff to save the 21 people whose jobs were on the line, folio: reports.

In May, Consumers Union asked the Newspaper Guild of New York, which represents the company’s guild-covered employees, to find $1.8 million in savings. The union couldn’t come up with the full amount but got enough for the company to agree to table the layoffs.

The union agreed that employees are giving up their 3% raise in exchange for a 4% lump sum payment —when and if the company can afford such a payment.
