WTOP's Madigan Receives Award, Says He Must Personally Vary Places he Goes

WTOP's "Man About Town" Bob Madigan was honored Sunday night at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel with the Duke Zeibert Capital Achievement Award. Think of it as a lifetime achievement award to the person who provides "dedication and leadership" to transforming Washington's restaurant industry. The event included a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing and delicious food stations. FOX 5's Sue Palka was mistress of ceremonies. She kept things moving and cracked a few jokes along the way. I caught up with Madigan this afternoon in a phone interview. He still sounded floored. "I can't believe that I was given the award," Madigan said. "That's how I feel. I don't consider myself to be in the same league as Phyllis Richmond or any of the other winners, especially an award named after Zeibert, who I know and have interviewed him several times. It's humbling. It's exciting from the point of view that people recognized that I love what I do and it also gives me [the ability] to shine a brighter light on what the restaurant and hospitality industries do." So where can people find Madigan in his free time? As in which restaurants does he prefer? "Oh that's a trap," he said. "As man about town, I'm about town all the time. It depends. I'm most comfortable almost anywhere. Someplace where I can go and be with friends and laugh and have a good time - that encompasses a lot of restaurants." He admits he must avoid going to any one place too often. "I have to be careful," he said. "If I go to the same place too many times people will see me as endorsement." He joked, "I don't have many journalistic ethics, but that's one." Ok, so come on. Name names. Madigan replied: "Equinox, Bourbon Steak, Rasika, Cafe Atlantico, Oyamel, Ping Pong, and Ben's Chili Bowl Next Door." He said of Ben's Chili Bowl's spinoff, "My cardiologist doesn't like that."
