<em>WBJ</em> Announces Newsroom Changes

Just before the WBJ's "Book of Lists" bash last night, Editor Douglas Fruehling announced some changes to the Biz Journal's newsroom. "Working the Room" and "Back Page" writer Jen Nycz-Conner will continue that role but has also taken on the role of media strategy manager aka "buzz generator-in-chief." Associate Editor Tim Burn will become the BizSmarts editor and writer. Commercial real estate staff reporter Melissa Castro is will transition into a new role as senior staff reporter for features and "Inner Loop." Vandana Sinha who has covered biotech, energy and environment will now focus on Web and evening editing. Staff reporters Tierney Plumb and Sarah Krouse are teaming up to cover all of the commercial real estate in the region. Though it was not mentioned in Fruehling's note, FishbowlDC confirmed that technology reporter Darlene Darcy is no longer with WBJ. The entire staff memo is available after the jump. To: All Staff From: Doug Fruehling I'm happy to announce some changes we're making in the Washington Business Journal newsroom. Here we go: Jen Nycz-Conner In addition to continuing her work on the Back Page and Working the Room column, Jen Nycz-Conner will be taking on a new role as senior staff reporter and media strategy manager. Jen will be in charge of taking our social media efforts to the next level. What does that mean? WeÂ’re asking her to reach out to other local media to get reporters booked on TV and radio, get our stories picked up on other Web sites, lead our video efforts, work with our events and marketing teams when appropriate on newsroom-focused event strategies. In short, she will be buzz-generator in chief. Tim Burn After 2 1/2 years in charge of all of our feature sections, Associate Editor Tim Burn will become our BizSmarts editor and writer. He will be responsible for editing all content in BizSmarts, including new features planned for the redesign, and he will write three to four small business profiles a month. Tim also will take charge of all of our special publications (Minority, Women, VC, Green, Best Places to Work, CFO, etc.). He will work with the marketing staff on each event from the beginning, helping organize the nominations, judgesÂ’ meetings, videos and photos. I've tasked Tim with re-energizing the special pubs this year, ensuring the content we provide readers in this area is just as good as the rest of our operation. Tim's previous duties editing our Focus sections will transition to Doug and Liz. Melissa Castro Staff Reporter Melissa Castro, who has spent two years on the commercial real estate beat and nearly one year writing our InnerLoop column, will transition into a new role as senior staff reporter. In addition to continuing writing Loops, Melissa will assist Doug and Liz with the Focus sections. She will write one to two Focus features a month and edit the remainder of the Focus content. Melissa has displayed a wonderful knack for elegant and informative business writing, and we have asked her to work with the entire reporting staff to improve the quality of our Focus sections. Vandana Sinha After nearly four years covering everything from health care to biotech to energy and the environment, we have asked Vandana to become a senior staff reporter, assisting the editing team with our online and evening editing. She will continue to cover biotechnology and the occasional green business story, along with her GreenPrints column in OnSite. Tierney Plumb and Sarah Krouse Staff reporters Tierney Plumb and Sarah Krouse, who had been handling our Web coverage and Maryland and Virginia economic development, respectively, are teaming up to cover all of the commercial real estate in the region.
