<em>WaPo's</em> Leiby Leaves Style After 20 Years

After two decades of working for WaPo's Style section, longtime editor and writer Richard Leiby is moving over to Local to replace Marc Fisher as editor of the Enterprise Team. There has been a cavalcade of Styler's who have left since Ned Martel came in as Style Editor in May 2009. Word around town is that Leiby's move is a big deal. In an internal memo, news of Leiby was announced with that of Lynda Robinson's move from the Social Issues team to a newly created post as Senior Projects Editor. The memo speaks of her "infectious enthusiasm." Robinson has been at the publication since 2000. Leiby, meanwhile, has been at WaPo since 1991. They say he's "well-suited" for the change. Leiby starts his new position on June 1. Robinson assumes her new role next month. "As much as I'll miss Style, I had a great 20-year run from the day I arrived after Gene Weingarten convinced me to join in the journalistic insanity at Style and I've never forgiven him," Leiby told FishbowlDC in a phone interview this afternoon. "But I've known Vernon Loeb, who hired me for the new gig, for years and he's the kind of guy who runs marathons before most people have eaten breakfast. Ink and adrenalin flow through his veins. I'll be working with a terrific team of writers and I know I will be regularly landing stories on the front page and will also be bringing a few of them to Style stories. We’re pleased to announce the following changes on the Local staff: Lynda Robinson will move from her current job as editor of the Social Issues team to a newly created position as senior projects editor to work with reporters from across the Local staff, and beyond. Her portfolio this year will include two large Local staff endeavors; a project she will jointly edit with colleagues from the Financial staff, and another collaborative endeavor with National. She will also continue editing Petula Dvorak’s metro column. Lynda’s career at The Post has been defined by her infectious enthusiasm, her craft as an editor, and the intense loyalty of the writers who work with her. She joined The Post in 2000 after 10 years at the Baltimore Sun and three years as managing editor at Capital Style, a magazine startup. Her first assignment was working with reporters in the Annapolis bureau. She then spent seven years as an editor at The Washington Post Magazine, where she burnished her reputation as a long-form story editor. She joined the Local staff in 2009 to lead the newly formed Social Issues reporting group. Lynda earned bachelor’s degrees in history and political science at Pennsylvania State University and a master’s in public affairs journalism at American University. She will transition into her new role over the next month. Rich Leiby will move from editing arts coverage in Style to replace Marc Fisher as editor of Local’s Enterprise team. Rich’s mandate will be to help the team’s writers produce the most original and revealing stories possible about all aspects of life in our region, broadly defined. Rich is well suited for the challenge. He left his job as features editor at the St. Paul Pioneer Press in 1991 to join The Post as an assigning editor in Style. He became Sunday Style editor in 1997 before returning to writing in 1999. In 2001, he began writing about the cultural and social impact of the war on terror. In 2004-05, he did a stint at the Reliable Source, then assumed his current position editing writers and critics who cover arts, entertainment, and culture. He has also parachuted into the Middle East several times, most recently to chronicle the revolution in Egypt. Rich studied journalism at Temple University. He will assume his new duties on June 1.
