WaPo's Carol Leonnig Writes White House Fence-Jumper Made it into the East Room

Leonnig writes:

“After barreling past the guard immediately inside the door, Gonzalez, who was carrying a knife, dashed past the stairway leading a half-flight up to the first family’s living quarters. He then ran into the 80-foot-long East Room, an ornate space often used for receptions or presidential addresses.”

Secret Service earlier said that Omar Gonzalez was detained by officers after jumping a fence and running approximately 100 yards just past the North Portico doors to the White House, a claim now disputed by “three people familiar with the incident.”

Leonnig’s report comes on the eve of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson’s Tuesday hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
