With WaPo's Ann Gerhart returning to style, the publication's Rachel Dry is taking her place as Outlook's new Deputy Editor. What's more, Outlook is seeking an Assistant Editor. The focus will be digital content. See the internal memo... We are delighted to announce that, with Ann Gerhart returning to Style, Rachel Dry will become Outlook's new deputy editor. Part of the Outlook team since 2006 -- barring a sojourn on the National desk during the 2008 campaign -- Rachel has long been a force behind some of Outlook's most compelling work. Whether it's Wesley Clark detailing the risks of a Libya intervention, Jessica Valenti delving into the world of SlutWalks, Halle Shilling finishing her Rock Creek run a decade after being attacked by Chandra Levy's killer, or Ruby Bridges revealing her struggles fifty years after her depiction in Norman Rockwell's "The Problem We All Live With," Rachel has a wonderful ability to combine newsy instincts with human story-telling. A Harvard grad, proud Vermonter and former member of the editorial team on "All Things Considered," Rachel is funny enough to do improv (which she does) and has one of the highest brains-to-ego ratios in the newsroom. We're delighted she's agreed to take this job. We're also announcing a new position. Outlook is seeking an Assistant Editor who will have a primary, but not exclusive, focus on digital content. Outlook produces some popular print/online features -- such as the Fix's "Worst Week in Washington" and the ubiquitous "5 Myths" franchise -- and we want to build on that success with a detail-oriented and imaginative editor who will bring energy and smarts to developing new Outlook features across platforms; who can conceptualize and execute audio, visual and interactive elements for Outlook content; who can expand our online audience and boost reader engagement; and who can work with teams throughout the newsroom to make it all happen. This person must also be an active contributor to Outlook's print edition, constantly churning out ideas and developing and editing stories. The ideal candidate would have top-notch editing skills, strong background in Web publishing and ease in working with reporters, outside contributors and producers.
