The FishbowlDC Interview With <em>HuffPost's</em> Sam Stein

Sunday is the fifth anniversary of The Huffington Post. So we've plucked HuffPost Politics Reporter Sam Stein out of the field of Washington, D.C. reporters to do the honors. It took a little arm twisting, but in the end, he semi-graciously agreed to do the interview. He came to the publication in 2007. Enjoy. If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be? Ginger Ale. For no particular reason. Though i guess it's because it's boring but enjoyable. How often do you Google yourself? That's what wonderful and loving Jewish mothers are for. Who is your favorite working journalist? HuffPost's (formerly WaPo's) Tom Edsall... oh wait, "working" journalist (kidding Tom). What's the worst thing you've ever said to an editor (or vice versa)? During an internship in college I was told to start considering different professions. Do you have a favorite word? Yes Who would you rather have dinner with - First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? Michelle, for sure. When did you last cry and why? After agreeing to fill out this interview. What word do you routinely misspell? Arianna What's the name of your cell phone ring? Harp What swear word do you use most often? The usual suspects. What word or phrase do you overuse? Indeed What TV show do you have to watch? I'd be trendy if I said "Mad Men." I'd be ridiculed if I said "Damages." I guess I'll be ridiculed (but watch the show before judging). Where do you shop most often for your clothes? Online Who do you prefer for daytime talk, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Tyra or the women of The View? I honestly don't watch daytime talk, except for when Rielle Hunter went on Oprah recently. So, I guess Oprah. Pick one: Leno, Letterman or Conan? Letterman Read about the time Stein got seriously chewed out by his editor and the biggest "scoop" he's ever had after the jump... If you were trapped on a deserted island, which public official would you want to be trapped with and why? Vice President Biden - we'd never run out of conversation topics. Who was your mentor? Tom Edsall (not just "was," is) What's the best advice you ever received in the course of your career? Dale Maharidge, my professor at Columbia Journalism School, taught all of his students the importance of actually placing yourself in the story and of challenging yourself to report on the unreported. I'll take that with me forever. What and where was your first job in journalism? An internship on the editorial page of the Connecticut Post. What's your most embarrassing career moment? After writing a truly pathetic lead for a truly excruciating WNBA game I was covering for the New York Daily News Sports Section, I was absolutely chewed out by my editor for being a truly poor reporter. Ugh...That's all I'd like to say about that. Which one interview of your career did you enjoy most? Sid Bernstein, the man who brought the Beatles to America. Which one interview of your career did you enjoy least? Does this questionnaire count? What's the biggest scoop you've ever had? Freshmen year of college I got a tip that this girl I kind of liked, who was dating another guy, might not be long for that relationship. I swooped in and now she's my wife.
