Here’s a twist: Interview your own editors for a story. Politico‘s Ben Smith did just that today in a story regarding Journolist – of which he was once a member. The reporter seeking his own editors’ comment was fitting as it directly involved Politico.
Editor-in-Chief John Harris said he supported Politico reporters such as Smith and Mike Allen being on the List and listening in on the conversation. “I knew you were on it. I knew Mike Allen was on it,” Harris told Smith. Harris said he does not, however, approve of the concept of the secret listerv and deems it “groupthink.”
Executive Editor Jim VandeHei also earned a mention and told Smith he had sought proof of assertions involving Politico from The Daily Caller‘s Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson.

> Update: VandeHei maintains that The Daily Caller story asserting that Politico reporters “participated in outpourings of anger over how Obama had been treated in the media, and in some cases plotted to fix the damage” is wrong.
He told FishbowlDC: “The Daily Caller wrongly reported that POLITICO was part of some media conspiracy, was asked to correct the error, and refused to do so. We have been very transparent about both the Journolist (we were the first to report on it, you may recall) and the POLITICO reporters who were on the mass email list.”
