<em>Politico</em> "Doubling Down" Congressional Coverage

Politico's seeming answer to WaPo's recent shut down of its Congress blog: add four more scribes to cover Congress and promote a deputy to bureau chief. Marty Kady (known as "Mr. Huddle") has been promoted to Congressional Bureau Chief from Deputy Congress Editor. It's only the beginning of a "new phase of expansion", says a newsroom source. In an internal announcement obtained by FishbowlDC this morning, Deputy Managing Editor Tim Grieve announces the "largest expansion" of their "best-in-class" Capitol Hill team since Politico began. The four reporters and from where they came: 1. Kasie Hunt, a reporter from CongressDaily. 2. James Hohmann, noteably an intern from WaPo and recent Stanford grad. WaPo offered Hohmann a full-time post but he turned it down to come to Politico. 3. Marin Cogan, assistant editor from TNR. 4. Erika Lovley, a reporter from Politico's own features department. And today, I'm thrilled to announce a huge development for us - the largest expansion of our best-in-class Capitol Hill team since POLITICO started publishing three years ago. We're adding four new reporters to our Congressional corps this week. Kasie Hunt, who started Monday, comes to us from the National Journal's CongressDaily, where she made her mark with smart, aggressive coverage of health care and other issues. She has worked previously for the Associated Press, USA Today, NBC News and the Voice of America. Kasie graduated from George Washington in 2006 and then earned a master's from St. John's College at the University of Cambridge, with a dissertation on gender in the 2008 presidential election. James Hohmann also started Monday. He joins us from an internship at The Washington Post, where his stories repeatedly landed on the front page. Prior to joining the Post, he reported for the LA Times, the Dallas Morning News and the San Jose Mercury News. He is a 2009 graduate of Stanford - Fear the Tree! - where he served as the editor-in-chief of The Stanford Daily and wrote a thesis on "How Ronald Reagan Lost the 1976 Election and Remade the National Political Order." Marin Cogan will join us later this week. For the last two years, she's been at The New Republic, where she wrote memorable pieces on Congress and rose quickly from intern to reporter-researcher to assistant editor. She interned previously for U.S. News & World Report and Pitt Magazine, and is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Honors College, where she was editor of The Pitt Political Review and a staffer for The Pitt News. And Erika Lovley - who needs no introduction - is making the move to the Congress team from features, where she has impressed everyone with her smart ideas, above-and-beyond reporting and incredibly disciplined story production. I couldn't be happier about her move to Capitol Hill. Last but not least, the man you know as "Mr. Huddle" is getting a new title. Marty Kady is our new Congressional Bureau Chief, a promotion that reflects not only the tremendous work he's done running minute-to-minute operations in the bureau over the last year but also the crucial Web-related duties he'll take on this year as we expand and improve our Capitol Hill coverage.
