Politico announces new hires as well as three of five summer interns today in a memo from Beth Frerking, Assistant Managing Editor of Partnerships. Hemal Jhaveri: Assistant Managing Editor of Digital and Social Media; Last job: Editor, producer, AOL.com homepage. Tony Romm: technology reporter; Last job: The Hill. Meet the Interns Emily Schultheis School: University of Pennsylvania Details: She sang in an a cappella group and worked in University of Pennsylvania's rare books library and watched old episodes of "The West Wing." Gloria Park School: Harvard Details: She is editor-in-chief of Harvard International Review; she has played piano in pit bands and sings with an opera troupe on campus. Daniel Strauss School: Just graduated from the University of Michigan Details: He has had past internships at Roll Call, the American Prospect and The New Yorker. Please join us today in welcoming several new hires: Hemal Jhaveri, our new Assistant Managing Editor of Digital and Social Media, will be in charge of growing POLITICOÂ’s traffic and overseeing our social networking efforts and mobile strategy. She spent the last four years at AOL, where she was an editor and producer for the AOL.com home page. There she covered news, politics, sports and entertainment. Before her time at AOL, Hemal was the online editor of the now defunct D.C. Style magazine. She was also one of the founding editors and managing editor of local blog DCist.com. Hemal graduated from James Madison University with a double degree in media arts and English. She has a masterÂ’s degree in English lit and cultural studies from George Mason University. Despite all that book learning, she reports to have a weakness for bad reality TV. SheÂ’s also a proud new home owner and uses her spare time to train for the Army 10 Miler. Tony Romm joins us as a technology reporter, giving us a powerful one-two punch with another recent arrival, Kim Hart. Tony comes to us from The Hill, where he blogged breaking tech news for Hillicon Valley, followed national politics for the Blog Briefing Room and reported stories for the newspaperÂ’s business and lobbying section. TonyÂ’s work has appeared in Slate, The Washington Post, Politics Daily and other publications. He hails from Levittown, Penn., graduated with top honors from American University in 2009, and has spent much of his time since then re-learning guitar. And say hello to three of our five summer interns: Emily Schultheis is an English and political communication major at Penn, where she'll be a senior next fall. She worked at The Daily Pennsylvanian, covering the 2008 Pennsylvania primary that spring and general-election politics that fall. She has interned at the Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia City Paper, UWIRE's '08 politics blog, and at the census watchdog blog MyTwoCensus.com. At Penn, she sang in an a cappella group, worked in Penn's rare books library and watched old episodes of "The West Wing." SheÂ’s from the San Francisco Bay-area town of Moraga, Calif. Gloria Park is majoring in government at Harvard, where she'll be a senior next year. She serves as the editor-in-chief of the Harvard International Review, a quarterly journal of international affairs. Last summer, she interned at an NGO in Buenos Aires and researched party and gender representation in the Argentine federal, provincial and local legislatures. Her senior thesis will be about the political identity formation of Mexican immigrants in North Carolina. She's conducted and played piano in pit bands for various musicals, and sings with a choir and opera troupe on campus. She's from Queens. Daniel Strauss just graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in history. He was an editor-at-large of Consider magazine, a current events weekly, and the White Sox writer for Gaper's Block magazine. He has also served as a magazine staff writer, city reporter, and student government reporter for the Michigan Daily. Past internships include: Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, Roll Call, The American Prospect, and The New Yorker. He is obsessed with music by Janelle Monae and continues an ill-fated loyalty to the Chicago White Sox, his hometown team. Hemal is sitting near the web producers' new pod; Tony sits next to Kim Hart; and the interns are scattered near Carrie Budoff-Brown and the web producers. Stop by and say hello.
