Top of post TV A Nielsen release announced that the Wednesday night coverage of the Republican Convention shows it reached 26,933 households. It also shows that the Sarah Palin speech generated 37.2 million viewers, just a 1.1 million viewers short of Barack Obama's "record-breaking speech on Day 4 of the Democratic Convention." A PBS release announced, "PBS/NewsHour Republican Convention Coverage Draws 3.2 Million Viewers on Wednesday Night." "Greta Van Susteren On The Empowering Nature Of Apathy" "Olbermann Has Angry Breakdown Over 9/11 Video Tribute" "After Palin's tremendous pushback, will journalists keep challenging the candidate?" An ABC release announced, "On Wednesday, September 3, ABC News' primetime coverage of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul averaged 5.90 million Total Viewers and a 2.1/5 among Adults 25-54. The coverage aired live across the country from 10-11:17 p.m., ET." And for the second night, ABC announced, "ABC News' primetime coverage of the Republican National Convention averaged 3.1 million Total Viewers and a 1.0/3 among Adults 25-54. Among the broadcast networks, ABC News placed second in Total Viewers for the night." Gail Shister: "For Brian Williams, 38,486 Miles and Counting" "Campbell Brown on Sexism and Sarah Palin" A NBC release announced, "On the third night of the Republican National Convention, 10.977 million Americans turned to the networks of NBC News. With Brian Williams anchoring the network coverage live from St. Paul, Minn., NBC News won amongst the broadcast networks with 7.700 million total viewers, attracting 31% more than ABC (+1,801,000). (Please note data for last night's CBS convention coverage is unavailable to competing networks as it aired without commercials)." And regarding the second night, NBC announced, "On the second night of the Republican National Convention, almost six million Americans turned to the networks of NBC News. With Brian Williams anchoring the coverage live from St. Paul, Minn., NBC News led the night with 4.509 million total viewers, attracting 46% more than ABC and 51% more than CBS." B&C reports, "CNN's Jon Klein, NBC News' Steve Capus dismiss criticism of Palin coverage as stale political strategy." Top of post ONLINE MEDIA "Comcast asked a federal appeals court to overturn an FCC ruling that the company is improperly managing customers' online traffic." An ABC release announced, "ABCNEWS.com continued to achieve double digit traffic growth in August 2008 in unique visitors, page views and video views versus the same time the previous year. ABCNEWS.com garnered 20.9 million uniques for the month, an increase of 51% compared with the same time last year, according to ABC's measurements. The site had 213.6 million page views, up 39% from the previous year and video views increased by 51% compared to the same time last year. "As you know, the magazine Us Weekly will hit news stands this coming weekend with a hit job on Governor Sarah Palin. Though Us Weekly claims that its coverage is very balanced, its cover features Governor Palin holding a baby with the headline 'Babies, Lies, and Scandal.' US Weekly, which has been a promotional vehicle for Senator Obama's campaign, is in the tank for Barack Obama and will stop at nothing to ruin Governor Palin's reputation. Please consider doing this: When you go to the grocery story this week, pick up a couple of copies of Us Weekly and deposit them on the shelves where the toilet paper is located." The International Herald Tribune reports, "The Wall Street Journal's new glossy lifestyle magazine for high-end consumers will debut with this Saturday's newspaper as the company looks to boost advertising opportunities amid an overall decline in the industry. The inaugural cover features a model wearing a dress made with the newspaper. And, in a stroke of luck, one of the debut articles explores the exercise habits of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who was tapped after it was written as the Republican vice presidential candidate." Portfolio's Mixed Media reports, "No Angst or Shame in 'WSJ' Magazine Debut" Top of post NEWS NOTES The Writers Guild of America, East issued a statement yesterday, calling on authorities to respect press freedom. "We believe that the arrests and harassment of working journalists by the police, local and federal officials at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions go against the nature of our democracy. Journalists have not only the right, but the duty, to be present at important events and to keep the public informed. Whether they represent independent media or mainstream outlets, they are the eyes and ears of the people. They must be respected and allowed to work wherever a story takes them. We decry the mass arrests, raids, and questionable tactics that the police have deployed against working journalists at these conventions. We call for the immediate release of all journalists, the dropping of charges against them, and an investigation into allegations of police misconduct."
