An ABC release announced, “ABC’s ‘World News with Charles Gibson’ and ‘Nightline’ will be broadcast in high definition beginning the week of August 25 from the Democratic National Convention in Denver and the following week from the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. The programs join the news division’s HD roster of ‘Good Morning America’ and ‘This Week with George Stephanopoulos.’ Together the four broadcasts — ‘GMA,’ ‘World News,’ ‘Nightline’ and ‘This Week’ -â€“ which are all originating from the convention cities, complement the network’s primetime HD coverage of the Democratic and Republican conventions. This marks the first time ABC has broadcast the political conventions in high definition.”

A Comcast release announced, “As the official cable television and Video On Demand provider for the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Comcast will, for the first time ever, produce simultaneous, online streaming coverage of the Convention in Spanish at DemConvention.com from Aug. 25 through Aug. 28. Comcast is also making available a broad range of Convention content through its signature On Demand service, including highlights of key speeches and Spanish-language content from each night of the Convention.” For more info, click here.

The New Republic reports, “A refresher lesson for some of our brothers and sisters in political journalism: There’s this thing called a general election. And, in a general election, candidates representing the two major political parties vie to become president. We’re sure that most of our colleagues know about this–or, at least, have heard it mentioned. But we feel obliged to reiterate it, because a broad swath of media has treated this election as if it were a one-man race. Watchdog groups, on both the right and left, have conducted surveys confirming the press’s narrow focus on Barack Obama. The Project for Excellence in Journalism, for instance, has found that Obama “significantly featured” in 79 percent of newspaper stories in the two months following his primary victory. Only 54 percent of the stories gave McCain the same treatment.”
